Nelson Lakes National Park

  Lake Rotoroa

Our first stop was lake Rotoroa, which was just stunningly beautiful, clear waters and the most awesome setting with it's Alps in the background. The only thing I could think about was jumping into the crystal clear blue water, but there was a little bit of a sandfly problem, once again.

After quickly jumping out of the car, taking pictures and running back to the car we drove further to lake Rotoiti, which was yet another crystal clear blue Lake in an amazing setting and way less sandlfies (Thank god, it couldn't really get worse than Lake Rotoroa)

We just walked around the beach for a little bit and enjoyed the sandly free time on the lake.

walking out a little bit into the water to cool my sandfly bites (We have a theme here, yes. Sandflies are the pure evil) I spottet an eel and Matt just went into full eel-photography-mode.

We spend quite some time just taking the breathtaking view in.

We stayed at a freedom camping spot that night and had to realize that the next town St. Arnaud had basically nothing besides an convenience store that was way overpriced, so we decided to raincheck my birthday dinner and wait until we find a better spot to eat along the way in the next few days.
The next day we went to Mount Robert and did a walk that a local on the Riverside camping in Murchinson recommended us.

The walk went all the way up Mount Albert (1400m) and was no joke especially if you are a quite unfit inexperienced hiker like we are.

I was quite happy that we survived and made it all the way to the top! It was a good 2 hours going straight uphill and after that it was 1 hour straight downhill.

In the End I have to say that I am pretty proud of myself that I made it and the view was simply stunning from up there! Totally would do it again in a week when everything stops hurting. If you are planning on doing the walk, make sure to pack enough water and snacks and don't forget your raincoat!
