Karamea
After waiting for the rain to pass we drove up north to Karamea where the Oparara Arches are located. The Oparara Arches are two Arches that are caved by water. The first Arch we visited was the slightly smaller Moria Gate Arch which is 43 meters long and 19 meters high.
The access to the Arch was through a small cave that you had to climb down and it was just awesome to climb through and see the Arch opening up in front of you.
Walking a little further you were able to see the Arch from the side. Just a few 100meters further along the path is the Oparara Arch which is 200m long and 37m high.
An absolute must do! The arch is 35Million years old and just beautiful.
We were even able to access it and have a look inside. It is more like a really big tunnel than an Arch if you ask me, but speak for yourself.
The road to these Arches is a 14km gravel road which leads uphill most of the time so be aware of a quite long ride.
Gentle Annie
Between Karamea and little Wanganu is a little lovely Spot called Gentle Annie and it basically is a camping Spot, a Cafe and a lookout on the beach. To get to the lookout you have to make your way through the Gentle Annie Point Maze, which is just such a cute and lovely idea.
The ramble through the maze is definitely worth the view! It was just beautiful and incredibly warm up there. The whole beachfront can be seen!
Little Wanganui
There is nothing really to do in little Wanganui besides to sleep in the little Wanganui Hotel, it is a Pub, Camping Spot and Hotel all in one. We loved it there, the owners were simply the nicest and even let us do our laundry and our dishes. They made it feel like home! While waiting for our laundry to dry we went to the beach (Yeeeaaaahhyy!!).
When I found a stick I did the one thing everyone would do, draw in the sand! (Okok first I did get really sad, because I miss my dog a lot, he would have a blast here if we would ignore the "no dogs!"-signs)
Westport
We wanted to give Westport another chance and at least check out the sights!Cape Fouldwind is the place to go in Westport
It has a quite short walk with amazing views of the sea and the landscape.
It was just so relaxing listening to the waves and watching them rolling onto the beach! Cape Foulwind was a truly Peaceful place, perfect to unwind.
It does not only have beautiful landscapes, it also has BABY SEALS.
It was the cutest watching them cuddling with their moms, how they clumsily climbed up the rocks.
They were so incredibly cute that we stayed ther just watching them for a good hour! I mean just look at them! A good of 20 or more seals were visible, most of them chilling in the sun while their kids were playing in the small pools.
We stayed at the Pines Tavern again that night and we just loved it! They make the best veggie burger I have ever eaten! It is 5$ per Person for a night and you have really good free wifi, a flushing toilet as long as the pub is open and a outside toilet in case the pub is closed, now the outside toilet is disgusting, but that is the only downside of this pub and for 5$ I really don't mind if I need to use a dirty disgusting toilet during the night! We loved it so much that we have recommended it to basically anyone heading north so far.
And that's it. I have to say the owners of the Pines Tavern saved our day by being just kind and humerous people after spending a day purely bumping in people wit the biggest frown in their faces in westport. You go guys, stay awesome!
