Farewell Spit and Pupu Springs

Just outside of Takaka are the Pupu Springs. A lovely local couple recommended it to us, so we gave it a shot.

The walk up to the springs is a 10 Minute walk and leads through a forest along the River that is created by the Springs.

To say that the water is crystal cleas is an understatement. Especially the colour of the water had us wanting to just take a dip in the river, which is forbidden.

The water was icecold and just beautifully turquoise, it might have been the prettiest shade of blue/green I have seen so far.

You were actually able to see how the water comes out of the ground and bubbles to the top.

I don't think the pictures show the true beauty of this place, since the turquoise is even brighter and more shining than a picture could ever fathom.

If you ever make your way to Takaka make sure to visit the Pupu Springs! An absolute Must!!

Collingwood

After visiting Pupu Springs we hit the road up north to Farewell Spit, on the way is Collingwood, a sleepy beach village with the smallest but cutest shops.

When Matt said that there is a Chocolate Confectionery I got super excited.

Rosy glow is the cutest, most delicious and friendliest chocolates shop I have seen so far. Even the saleswomen was dressed in style with the cute 1940's stlye shop.

We discussed long and hard which chocolotes to get, there was just too much to choose from!

We opted for a White Chocolate Fudge Cake ad a Coconut Cream Chocolate.

They were both incredibly delicious, just like all the other chocolates as I can imagine. We met some friendly locals that gave us a bite of their Raisin and Rum chocolate and I did regret getting nothing Chocolate fudgy, there definitely is something for everyone!

I mean common, just look at that! It is beautiful and Fudgy and I really want some right now.

Farewell Spit

Totally stuffed by the chocolate we made our way up to Farewell Spit. The closer we got the windier it was. Arriving at the carpark on which the 2 1/2 hour walk starts we decided to probably change into something warmer and wind resistant, which turned out to be a really good Idea.

The walk to the top on the inner side of the Spit was pretty fun, we collected shells and just enjoyed our walk on the beach.

after about 4 Kilometers you are not allowed to proceed further into the Spit, so we followed the walk that went straight over the middle of the Spit onto the outer beach.

Now I don't know how to put this but the middle of the Spit was crazy, shifting dunes, oasis like green patches and desert-like landscapes.

The ground was mainly sand and we climbed over endless dunes, which is pretty exhausting. Originally there were markers telling us where the track went, but the shifting dunes had better plans with the. We just kinda stubled trhough the dunes and sandstorm like winds until we reached the other side.

Eventhough I had sand EVERYWHERE and we just got ourselves an
unintentional sand peeling on our legs and faces it still was super fun to adventure through the dunes.

The outter beach was incredibly windy, so windy that we walked in each others slipstream to make it easier to walk. I have never been in a wind that nearly knocked me over until that day! It was crazy and yet so beautiful.

My tip for Farewell Spit: Windproof Jacket, long trousers, flip flops (because you are going to walk barefood most of the time anyways), Cap to protect your face from sand and sunglasses to pretect your eyes from everything and don't forget plenty to drink since the salty air makes you thirsty.
Even if that does make you look a little crazy, I was pretty thankful for my wind/sand Protection.

The walk took us 3 1/2 hours and when we arrived back at the car, we were two really tired, sandy and salty travellers who were looking forward to just roll into bed and sleep. Not even the nightsky that was covered in stars made me leave the car, I just asked Matt to open the trunk so I was able to look outside and still lay in bed.
