Takaka and Abel Tasman Beaches

Takaka Hill

Driving from the Canaan Downs to Takaka we stopped at Takaka Hill to do the Walk up to the top.

The walk took place in a pretty stoney enviornment. The contrast between the grey stones, green and white plants and white and blue sky was stunning

We got followed by a cloud that rolled over the hill.

The view from the top was amazing, eventhough you had to run around and change positions because clouds were blocking the view quite often, luckily a hill has more than one good view.

The top was covered in Stones that you could climb in and sit on to enjoy your view.

Two German girls offered to take a picture of us, so we finally have a real couple-picture that is not a selfie (Yeahy!).

Takaka

Takaka is a pretty laid back village in Golden Bay.

It is covered in cute towns, awesome art and has a beautiful Memorial Park. The locals are super friendly and you can find lots of alternative stores.

The shops have the cutest names you can imagine, here's one for example. There are a few Fish and Chips booths and Restaurants and a Fresh choice in which you should stock up before driving up to Farewell Spit since it is the last supermarket.

On our way to the Abel Tasman Beaches

On the Map: Yellow Circle: Labyrinth Rocks, Red Circle: Abel Tasman Memorial, Blue Circle: Totoranui Beach, White Circle: Awaroa Beach

Labyrinth Rocks

The Labyrinth was formed by water, that washed out the stones nad created passages between them. Dave Witthaker, a geologist, discovered it and started to clear the woods to create tracks between the rocks, he placed little figures on the rocks to make it even more interesting to little kids. I imagine it was a wonderful and magical place when he opened it. Sadly he died a few years back and since the plants in the Labyrinth are starting to overgrow it again, eventhough there is a small group that is trying to maintain it.

In the Entrance you can get a map that is pointing out the funniest stone constellations and fromations.

This for example is the Troll Bridge.

And here is the Glacier.

All in all it was a fun day trip, but it is really sad that some formations couldn't be seen due to plants growing over it.

The Grove

The Grove is a small rainforest like area with huge rocks in it.

We opted for a walk that was leading straight to the viewing Plattform an back.

The nature around us was amazingly pretty and we walked past meter high cliffs.

The viewing plattform enabled us to gaze out to the ocean and the hills, it was beautiful.

Abel Tasman Memorial

Driving further towards the Abel Tasman National Park is the Abel Tasman Memorial,
just in fron of the carpark is a sign saying that there might be penguins on the road, but we sadly saw none.

The view from the Abel Tasman Memorial is incredibly pretty and just a 5 minute walk from the carpark

You can let your gaze wander over the ocean up to the hills

I don't know why but there is something about the contrast of ocean/beach and hills that is just super pretty.

A few kilometers further down the coast was an incredibly cute beach that I just had to take a picture of it, just look at its colour!

Totoranui and Awaroa Beach

Totoranui Beach really disappointed me, I was ready for white sands and paradisic beautiful beaches, but the beach was just a touristy ordinary beach. Don't get me wrong, I really like any kind of beaches, but the drive down there was not really worth it.

We headed on to Awaroa Beach which was on the other side of the mountain. The beach was beautiful! It was low tide so you could walk all the way out to the front to see the sea! I absolutely loved it.

Just walking through the watt was so fun!, yet the lanscape did not fail to amaze me

Nothing is better then cooling off your sandfly-bite covered feed in nice cold seawater!

We headed back to Takaka after that to head upwards to Farewell Spit the next day.
Even the most adventourus Adventurer need their sleep (We fell asleep at 9pm).
